Elixir Ingredient Benefits
Urea
Urea is known as a keratolytic agent. This means it breaks down the protein keratin in the outer layer of your skin. This action can help reduce dead skin build-up and eradicate flaky or scaling skin. The exfoliating actions are strongest in creams containing more than 10 percent urea.
Urea can act as a humectant. Humectants work by drawing water into the skin to help the skin stay smooth and moisturized. It plays an important role in preserving skin hydration and health.
Salicylic Acid
Salicylic Acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA), a type of acid that is oil-soluble making it easier for it to penetrate and unclog pores, as well as clear out dead cells, while also regulating excess sebum production. Salicylic Acid also helps stimulate cell turnover revealing smoother, healthy-looking skin.
Topical salicylic acid treats skin conditions by softening and loosening dry, scaly, or thickened skin so that it falls off or can be removed easily.
Coconut Oil
The popularity around coconut oil is well deserved with studies backing up just how beneficial it is for skin conditions. Rich in acids that are antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and antimicrobial it is a one-stop shop when it comes to protecting, healing, and nourishing damaged and dry skin. Lauric and Capric acid are excellent when it comes to keeping skin healthy, due to their antimicrobial properties which allow them to kill harmful microorganisms, bacteria, and fungi that grow on our skin and cause irritation, inflammation and pain. Coconut oil is an excellent emollient helping to break down hard skin, while having the ability to boost antioxidants and collagen levels, reinforcing the skin’s natural defensive barrier. Together, these ingredients play an important role in the natural regeneration and repair process of our skin, ultimately helping to better retain moisture.
Camellia Oil
Camellia oil comes from out of East Asia, specifically Japan and China. It is an oil that is packed with natural antioxidants including vitamin A, C, and E, which are essential in combating free radicals. Free radicals can lead to oxidative stress, resulting in damage to our skin. Camellia oil helps neutralise these harmful molecules, assisting with healing, and soothing skin redness and inflammation. Camellia oil is truly a hidden treasure when it comes to skin restoration, and due to its gentle anti-inflammatory properties, it is the perfect oil for sensitive or irritated skin.
Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera is a traditional medicinal plant that has been used since 1500 BC. Did you know that Egyptian queens Nefertiti and Cleopatra used Aloe Vera as part of their beauty regimes? It makes a lot of sense considering it boasts 20 minerals, 20 amino acids, along with vitamins and water. In-vitro studies have found that Aloe Vera can inhibit thromboxane (an inhibitor of wound healing), and that magnesium lactate that is found in Aloe Vera can prevent the production of histamine that causes itching and irritation of the skin.
Aloe Vera is known for its anti-inflammatory, skin protection, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, antiseptic, and wound healing properties.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E has been linked to reducing and alleviating skin conditions including psoriasis, dry, flaky and itching skin. Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that acts as an antioxidant, and in doing so helps to protect cells from damage. Found in the body’s sebum (skin oil) it creates a natural barrier to keep in moisture, which is vitally important in helping keep skin supple. When it comes to dry, flaky and thickened skin (commonly found on the heels of our feet) Vitamin E is an essential ingredient to soften skin, protect from cell damage and assist the skin from losing moisture.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is an essential oil that is sourced from the Australian tea tree. It has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce inflammation and fight off bacteria on hard skin, reducing its chance of infecting cracks and fissures on the heels. It also has a soothing and moisturizing effect, making it an excellent natural remedy for dry, cracked skin. Regular use of tea tree oil can help soften and nourish hard skin, leaving it smoother and healthier.
Avocado Oil
Packed with essential fatty acids, along with vitamins A, B, C, D, and E and minerals such as iron, copper, magnesium, and potassium, this powerful combination helps soften skin and protect it from moisture loss. Avocado oil helps with skin cell regeneration, fighting off free radicals (as it is rich in antioxidants), and provides deep moisturization and hydration of the skin. Avocado oil is an extremely effective oil when it comes to treating dry, flaky, itchy, cracked, and inflamed skin.
